Sussex snow

Headed out for an amazing walk in the Downs on Saturday. Up at the crack of dawn for a quick hike up Devil's Dyke and Newtimber for some fantastic snowy scenes. Cannot recall another snowfall like it - with some paths virtually unpassable with their drifts beyond my knees!

Fry up

What better way to escape the December hail than pop into Hove's finest greasy spoon, the Brown Sugar Cafe on Western Road. The perfect antidote to Christmas shopping – and a great way to fill up on my way into town on a cold midwinter day. Thank you!

Lunchtime adventure

I'm working in Reigate at the moment and the other day spotted a poster for an exhibition of John Spencer, artist/illustrator/printmaker. He was kind enough to talk me through his work and show me his amazing studio downstairs - where drawers of type (Plantin, Bembo, Perpetua and Gill) competed for space with woodblocks, presses and paper. His work ranges from one off lithographs, wood engravings, adventures in letterpress and whatever he might find lying in the street that has print potential! An inspiration. You can see more of his work here.

December treats

The beautiful advert calendar at www.kiosco.de is a perfect way to start each day in December. These clever folks have comissioned illustrators and designers to create unique images behind each day of the month. Today's image - above - is by the talented Eva Siegert. Beats chocolate any day!

The world's smallest library?

A wonderful idea - creating a tiny community library within an old telephone box. The village of Westbury-sub-Mendip was due to lose both its iconic red phonebox and local library. The solution? Buying the phonebox and installing shelves to create a miniature book swap shop. Read more here.

Zippy

I've upgraded my Mac's memory this afternoon and it's running great - feels like I'm driving a brand new car! Thanks to the boys in Cancom Brighton!

Off-season

Rode Minty down to the sea yesterday - when I left it was sunny but quickly turned to hail! The sea was rough as anything, with seaspray lashing the shore and my face. But the colour of the sea was amazing: a yellow-grey, with a moody blue-grey sky.

Wolff

Booked my ticket to see the inimitable Michael Wolff at the Typographic Circle's lecture on 3rd December. Can't wait.

Crafty

Been looking at my friend Amy's logo for her one-woman wonder, Craft Mondays. Going to get a rubber stamp made for her xmas pressie! These were the final three options of my afternoon's work.

Culture vulture

Took the train north yesterday and had a cultural trip to London. Walked around for hours, taking in the British museum (and a visit to the delightful Blade Rubber stamps shop), walking along Shaftesbury Avenue and along Pall Mall to eventually the Royal Academy, where I saw the fantastic Wild Thing exhibition. The show features the work of Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and how they swept preconceptions of classical sculpture aside and instead took inspiration from 'primitive' cultures to create their very own style of 'direct carving'. Amazing how relevant and futuristic some of their work still looks.

Winter in the air

Came across a card I'd bought from the beautifully designed Ditchling museum back in may when my friend Amy was down. Penny Bhadresa's gorgeous linocut really sums up this time of year and reminds me that I really ought to get my lino stuff out to do some xmas cards...watch this space!

In praise of BBC Four Golden Age of Glamour

BBC Four's 'seasons' continue with a whole host of programmes about the 20s and 30s I've been enjoying over the last month. From the golden age of liners, to the expansion of the suburbs, the formation of London Transport and the spread of Deco in the design of everyday objects, it's been a real joy to learn more about this most fanstastic and escapist period of the 20th century.

True blood

Been enjoying the new HBO series, True Blood, with the fantastic Anna Paquin as a wide-eyed southern waitress with an open mind about vampires. The title sequence, by Digital Kitchen is fanstastic (who also worked with Alan Ball on Six Feet Under). Read more about the project - complete with bespoke True Blood typeface - on their website:

Remember, remember

Another great night in Lewes to see their annual processions through the high street, where Bonfire societies from around Sussex dress up and parade through town. Headed up in the hills to see some amazing firework displays. Unrivalled! The biscuits fuelled me throughout the evening, along with some sugary teas. Home at midnight.

Bonfire night!

We're off to Lewes tonight for their legendary Bonfire society processions through the old town streets - costumes, crackers, torches and effergies - to ring in the start of winter. Made some of my nana's oat biscuits to keep us going. Deciding whether or not to take my camera - it all gets a bit of a crush when the streets get filled of locals and us Brighton day-trippers.

Poppies

Went for a walk out in the downs on Sunday - couldn't help noticing how many striking poppies were growing through the harvested fields. Beautiful.

Red rubber bands

Spotted today on the tube - a small child with a tricycle, with its handle bar pole completely covered in Royal Mail red rubber bands. I mean, a few hundred at least! What explanation for this could there possibly be? Is it a safety thing, a crazy collector thing or just a really nice way of tidying London's streets?

Credit crunch aesthetic?

Anyone else noticed the profusion of type-based ad campaigns recently? Riding through Earls Court the other night, all the billboards were plastered with Oxfam, Specsavers and DFS campaigns, all noted for the absence of any imagery.

Nordic nights

Saw the Kings of Convenience last night at the wonderful Bexhill de la Warr pavillion. The Norwegian duo played a great set with some new tunes and were star entertainers as well, with Erlend recounting hilarious tales of the frosty reception of customs officers at Dover. Warm up came from Swedish sisters Taxi Taxi.

Indian summer

Went on a gorgeous 21 miler yesterday into the hills - Cuckmere to Jevington and around to the Seven Sisters for a workout back to the car. Sun shone throughout despite the depths of autumn.

Green day

I recently made a short film as part of H&K's 'green day' - to enter www.1minutetosavetheworld.com competition. The film was made during the day of 22 September and premiered at the evening unplugged session at our bar. On the day, the company saved 17% of energy - a great result!
